How this calculator works

Every figure in this calculator is the one published in the cost table on our burst pipes & leaks guide. Pick the option that matches your job and the calculator returns that published range, adjusted for your region - it does not model anything the guide does not already say.

That is deliberate. A calculator whose rates drift from the page it sits under is worse than no calculator, because two numbers on the same site disagree.

What it cannot know: access, the condition of what is already there, and anything structural. Those are what separate three real quotes from each other.

Burst pipes & leaks calculator โ€” FAQs

Turn off the stopcock, then open the cold taps to drain the system. If water is near electrics, switch off at the consumer unit. Take photographs before you clear up — insurers ask for them, and they cost nothing to take.

Most buildings policies cover escape-of-water damage and often 'trace and access' — the cost of finding the leak and making good afterwards. The repair to the failed pipe itself is sometimes excluded. Check your trace-and-access limit before authorising invasive work.

Lag pipework in lofts, garages and against external walls, keep some background heat during cold snaps, and know where your stopcock is and that it turns. Loft pipework is where most winter bursts happen, and lagging costs a few pounds a metre.

Most emergency plumbers aim for 1–4 hours. Isolating the supply yourself buys you time and dramatically reduces the damage bill while you wait.
