How we write, check and correct what we publish
The rules our guides, cost pages and town pages are written under — and what to do if you think we have got something wrong.
Who the pages are for
Every page on BestBuilders is written for a homeowner who is about to spend real money on their house and wants to know, before they pick up the phone, roughly what the job should cost, what a fair quote looks like and what to ask a builder. That is the test we apply to anything we publish. If a page does not help with one of those three questions, it does not go up.
We write in plain English. Where a term has a specific meaning — a Building Control notice, a party wall agreement, a Part P certificate — we explain it the first time we use it rather than assuming you already know.
Where our figures come from
Cost ranges on this site come from BestBuilders’ 2026 regional cost model, which combines national cost guides with a regional labour index. The model is described in full on our methodology page, including what it can and cannot tell you. We do not present a modelled range as a quote, and we say so on every cost page.
Regulatory statements — when Building Regulations apply, what needs a notifiable certificate, when planning permission is likely — are checked against the current government guidance before publication and again at each scheduled review. Where the rules differ between England, Scotland and Wales, we say which one a page is describing.
Commercial independence
BestBuilders is paid by the tradespeople and partner networks we introduce homeowners to, never by homeowners. That arrangement is set out on our how we get paid page. It has no bearing on what we write. No builder, supplier or manufacturer can pay to be recommended in a guide, to have a cost range moved, or to be placed above anyone else, and none has ever been offered the chance.
We do not publish sponsored content, advertorial or paid reviews. If a commercial relationship ever became relevant to a specific page, it would be disclosed on that page.
Reviews and testimonials
We only publish reviews from homeowners who used the service, and we do not write, invent or embellish them. Illustrative examples on cost pages are labelled as illustrations. We do not attach star ratings or review counts to anything unless they come from real, countable reviews.
Updates and corrections
Each page carries the date it was last updated and the date of its next scheduled review. Cost pages are reviewed when the underlying model is refreshed; regulatory pages are reviewed when the guidance they rely on changes, and at least once a year regardless.
If you spot an error — a figure that looks wrong, a rule that has changed, a broken link — tell us through the contact page or at editorial@bestbuilders.co.uk. We check every report, and we would rather correct a page than leave it standing. Material corrections are made on the page itself rather than hidden in a note.
What this policy does not cover
The builders you are matched with are independent businesses. What they quote, promise or do is between you and them, and nothing on this site is a guarantee of their work. Our terms explain that relationship, and our complaints page explains what we can and cannot help with when something goes wrong.
