Estimate Your Driveway Cost in 30 Seconds

5 steps. Includes excavation, sub-base, surface, edging, labour, VAT and skip hire. Drop kerb and SuDS drainage add-ons are priced separately.

How This Calculator Works

Our driveway calculator combines four inputs (surface, size, add-ons, region) with real 2026 UK supply-and-fit pricing from BALI/Interlay-approved installers across our 519-town database.

Surface Rates (per m², fitted)

  • Resin-bound — £85–£120/m² (permeable, SuDS-compliant)
  • Block paving — £70–£140/m² (most popular)
  • Tarmac — £45–£75/m² (cheapest installed)
  • Concrete (printed/plain) — £55–£90/m²
  • Gravel (bonded sub-base) — £35–£60/m²

Includes excavation, sub-base, surface, edging, labour, VAT and skip hire.

Add-ons & Regional Multipliers

  • Drop kerb +£1,300 · Linear drain +£500 · SuDS soakaway +£700
  • London 1.28× · South East 1.14× · South West 1.05×

  • North West 0.93× · North / Yorkshire 0.92×
  • Wales 0.94× · Scotland 0.96× · NI 0.88×

Low/high band reflects the real per-m² spread for each surface (e.g. block paving £70–£140). A real quote follows a site survey.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a new driveway cost in 2026?

It depends on surface and size: resin-bound runs £85–£120/m² in 2026, block paving £70–£140/m², tarmac £45–£75/m², concrete £55–£90/m² and gravel £35–£60/m². A typical 40m² block-paved drive is around £3,500–£5,000 fitted. London and the South East run higher.

When do I need SuDS-compliant drainage?

Since 2008 UK regulations, any new driveway over 5m² must use a permeable surface OR drain to a soakaway, garden or porous area — not into the public sewer. A linear drain adds about £500 and a full SuDS soakaway about £700.

Do I need a drop kerb?

If you are accessing from a public road without an existing dropped kerb, yes. A drop kerb typically costs £900–£1,800 and is arranged through your council's highways department.

Resin or block paving — which is better?

Resin-bound is smooth, fully permeable and lasts 20–25 years; block paving is traditional, repairable block-by-block and lasts 25–30 years. Costs are similar (roughly £70–£120/m²), so it comes down to look and maintenance preference.

How do I find a good driveway installer?

Look for BALI or Interlay accreditation, get at least three quotes on the same specification, and check for a written 10-year guarantee on paving. We match you with up to three vetted local installers free.

How accurate is this driveway cost estimate?

It gives a guide based on average UK 2026 prices for the surface and area you enter, not a fixed quote. The real cost depends on excavation depth, ground conditions, the sub-base needed, drainage and any kerb or edging work. Use the estimate to budget, then get a site survey, as ground you cannot see drives much of the price.

What does the driveway estimate include and exclude?

The figure typically covers excavation, a standard sub-base, the chosen surface, edging, waste removal and 20% VAT. It usually excludes SuDS-compliant drainage or soakaways, dropped-kerb applications, retaining walls, tree-root removal and disposing of contaminated or heavy clay spoil. Sloping plots and poor ground add cost, so treat those as extras on top of the guide figure.

Why might a driveway quote differ from the calculator?

A calculator cannot assess your ground. An installer prices the actual dig depth, soil type, drainage falls and access for machinery once they survey the site. Soft or clay ground needs a deeper sub-base, and drainage rules can add cost. Higher London and South East labour rates also mean a real quote often sits above or below the average estimate.
