Every cost figure, planning rule and how-to step on BestBuilders is researched from primary UK sources, checked against real 2026 quotes coming through our platform, and reviewed by our team before it is published. This page explains exactly how we do that — what we use, how often we update it, how we stay independent, and how to tell us if we ever get something wrong.
What you can expect from our guides
BestBuilders exists to give UK homeowners an honest, current picture of what home-improvement projects really cost and what the rules really say in 2026. Our editorial content is held to four principles:
- Accurate and current. Cost ranges reflect 2026 UK pricing, not figures recycled from years ago. Every guide carries a visible "last reviewed" date.
- Sourced and verifiable. Prices, planning rules and regulations are taken from primary UK sources and cross-checked, not guessed.

Where our 2026 figures come from
Our cost ranges are built from a combination of primary sources and reviewed for consistency before publication:
- Real quote data from our platform. Homeowners request quotes through BestBuilders every week. The anonymised, aggregated spread of those quotes across UK regions is our single most current signal for what trades are charging now.
- Independent industry benchmarks. We cross-check against published building-cost data such as RICS BCIS and Federation of Master Builders (FMB) member surveys.
- Manufacturer and supplier pricing. For products such as boilers, kitchens, EV chargers and solar, we reference current manufacturer and retailer pricing (e.g. Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Howdens, Zappi) rather than estimates.
- Official regulatory sources. Planning rules, permitted-development limits and building-regulations requirements come from the Planning Portal, GOV.UK and the relevant competent-person schemes (Gas Safe, NICEIC/NAPIT, MCS, F-Gas/REFCOM).
How we check what we publish
Figures and rules are checked against at least one primary source before publication, and time-sensitive facts — energy price caps, grant schemes, regulation dates — are dated so you can see how current they are. Where a number is a typical range rather than a fixed price, we say so, and we explain the factors that move a real quote within that range (size, specification, access, region). If sources disagree, we present the realistic spread rather than cherry-picking the most eye-catching figure.
How often we update
Cost guides are reviewed on a rolling quarterly cycle against live quote data and updated whenever the market, a regulation or a grant scheme changes. How we make money — and why it does not bias our guides
BestBuilders is a free service for homeowners. We are funded by connecting people who request quotes with vetted local tradespeople; we may be paid when we successfully match you with a trade. That is the entire business model — there is no charge to you, and no obligation.
Crucially, that funding is kept separate from our editorial content. We do not sell placements, rankings or cost figures in our guides. A brand or trade cannot pay to appear more favourably in a cost comparison or a planning explainer. The numbers are the numbers, wherever they fall.
Automation and AI, used responsibly
We use data tooling — including AI assistance — to help gather pricing signals, keep large numbers of regional figures current and draft updates at scale. It is a tool, not the author. Every cost range, regulatory reference and recommendation is reviewed by a person against primary sources before it goes live, and we take responsibility for what we publish. We will never present an unverified, machine-generated figure as fact.
