Getting it priced properly
1. Respect the metre line
Under a metre with a garden above: a competent landscaper. Over it, or with a drive or building above: structural engineer first, builder second - in that order.
2. Make drainage visible in the quote
Gravel backfill, a perforated pipe and weep holes should be itemised. A wall quoted without them is a wall quoted to fail.
3. Ask who owns the wall
Boundary retaining walls between properties are a legal grey zone - agree in writing whose wall it is before spending on it.

Past a metre, it is a structure not a garden job
The figure that matters on a retaining wall is not the £150–400 a square metre — it is the height. Up to about a metre of retained ground, sleepers or block on a decent footing are a straightforward landscaping job. Past roughly 1.2m, or wherever the wall holds up a driveway, a neighbour's ground or anything with a load behind it, you are into engineered territory: it needs designing to hold the forces, it usually needs building regulations approval, and a wall that fails is both dangerous and expensive to put right. So the first question for any quote is how high the retained face is, and whether the builder is designing for it or just stacking to a look.
Ask to see how the wall drains, too — water building up behind it is what pushes walls over, more often than the weight of the soil.
