How this calculator works

The grade sets the system and the first four devices; every device after that is added at the per-device rate for that grade, because a Grade A call point costs more than a Grade D smoke alarm.

Radio interlink usually comes out cheaper overall in a finished house: the hardware costs more, and it saves chasing walls, patching and redecorating.

Not included: the annual service and certificate, which is ยฃ90โ€“ยฃ300 a year on a rented or commercial building and is what an inspector asks to see.

Grade D is interlinked alarms with their own power. Grade A is a system with a control panel, separate detectors, sounders and manual call points.

Battery radio-interlinked alarms, yes. Mains-powered alarms are fixed electrical work and fall under Part P in England and Wales.
