Bathroom design is sold three ways: free with a showroom suite, a flat £300–£1,200 from an independent designer, or 8–12% of the build cost for a full service. The free option is rarely free — it is priced into the suite.

Getting it priced properly
1. Settle the layout first
Whether the WC, bath and basin stay put decides most of the cost. Agree the layout before anyone quotes, because moving waste changes the number entirely.
2. Ask who certifies what
Bathroom electrics are notifiable under Part P and any gas work is legally Gas Safe. Ask which trade is certifying which part, and check the register yourself.
3. Compare like for like
Get three itemised quotes covering the same spec tier, the same fittings and the same amount of making good, so you are comparing the job and not the wording.
Design & planning — frequently asked questions
On a straight like-for-like refit, usually not. It earns its fee when the layout changes, the room is awkward, or the soil stack is in the wrong place — the mistakes it prevents cost far more than the fee once the walls are open.
The design costs nothing extra, but it is paid for in the suite price and it specifies from that retailer’s range only. It is a good deal if you were buying there anyway.
A measured survey, a scaled plan and elevations, a specification listing every fitting, and the services layout showing where water, waste and power runs. Without the services layout your fitter is guessing.
Yes, and an independent designer is specified to be brand-neutral for exactly that reason. Agree in writing who is responsible if the design does not fit what is behind the plaster.
