How this calculator works

Tiling is quoted per square metre, so the honest way to compare quotes is to check they are all working to the same area, the same layout and the same preparation. A rate that looks cheap usually excludes stripping the old tiles or boarding the wet area.

Tile choice moves the labour rate as much as the material. Large-format porcelain needs two people and a levelling system; mosaic and stone are slow by the metre and stone needs sealing afterwards.

The prep answer is the one worth being honest about. Tiling a shower area straight onto plasterboard is the most common reason tiles come away, and it is far cheaper to board it properly now than to redo it.

Bathroom tiling calculator FAQs

No. This prices labour, adhesive, grout and trims. Tiles themselves run from about £15/m² for ceramic to £80/m²+ for natural stone, so buy them separately and to the same area plus 10% for cuts.

Ten percent on a straight layout, fifteen on brick bond, and twenty on herringbone or chevron. Order it all in one batch — tile shades vary between batches.

Sometimes, if they are firmly bonded and flat, and the extra thickness will not foul the door or the sanitaryware. In a shower area it is usually better to strip back and board properly.

Raking out old grout without chipping the tiles is slow, careful work. It is half a day to a day of labour, which is why it lands at £180–£450 regardless of the room being small.
