How this calculator works
Every figure in this calculator is the one published in the cost table on our pipe fitting guide. Pick the option that matches your job and the calculator returns that published range, adjusted for your region - it does not model anything the guide does not already say.
That is deliberate. A calculator whose rates drift from the page it sits under is worse than no calculator, because two numbers on the same site disagree.
What it cannot know: access, the condition of what is already there, and anything structural. Those are what separate three real quotes from each other.

Why a per-metre price for pipework misleads
Ask what a metre of pipe costs and you’ll get a number that means almost nothing. The pipe is cheap. What you’re paying for is getting to where it goes, fixing it in place and making every joint sound – and none of that scales neatly with length. Ten metres in an open loft is a different job from two metres chased into a plastered wall.
Scope is the first question. A clean new run to a new bathroom is straightforward. Rerouting existing pipework around a kitchen refit is more involved, and ripping out old lead or galvanised steel to replace it with copper or plastic push-fit is more involved still, because you’re working with what’s already there rather than a blank wall. Each of those is priced differently even if the run is the same length.
Access is where the hours go. Pipework hidden in a wall has to be chased in and made good; pipework under a floor means lifting boards and putting them back. If the route is open and reachable, you pay for little more than the fitting itself. If it’s buried, boxed in or behind a finished surface, the labour climbs fast and the pipe is the least of it.
Then there’s draining down. Cutting into a live system means draining that section and refilling it afterwards, and on an older setup that can eat a surprising amount of the visit. It’s routine work, but it’s time on the clock, and it’s one of the reasons a “quick” alteration is rarely as quick as it sounds.
Materials shift the figure too. Copper costs more than plastic push-fit and takes longer to fit properly, and the count of elbows, tees and valves on a fiddly run adds up more than the straight pipe does. A short, awkward job with a lot of fittings can easily cost more than a long, simple one – which is exactly why length on its own tells you so little.

The clearest triggers are lead supply pipework, galvanised steel that has furred up and dropped your flow, repeated pinhole leaks in old copper, or a full renovation where walls and floors are open anyway. Doing it during a renovation is far cheaper than as a standalone job.
Both are compliant and both last. Copper is more rigid, tolerates heat better and looks better where pipes are visible; push-fit plastic is quicker to install in awkward runs, which is why it dominates on hidden work. Many installers mix the two by location.
It is not compulsory in most cases, but it is strongly advised — and many water companies replace their portion free or at reduced cost if you replace yours, so ask before you book the work.
Non-urgent work is typically 1–3 weeks out. Emergency leak repair is same-day, at a higher call-out rate.
