Plain concrete — a broom or power-float finish — is the cheapest, toughest and lowest-maintenance driveway you can lay, and it never needs resealing. Pattern-imprinted concrete stamps a colour and texture into the wet slab to mimic block paving, cobbles or stone; it looks smart and is seamless, but it costs 40–70% more and needs resealing every few years to keep its colour and slip resistance. If looks lead the decision, pattern-imprinted wins; if budget and durability lead, plain concrete is hard to beat.
Durability: does concrete crack?
Concrete only cracks when it is built badly. A driveway needs a compacted Type 1 sub-base, a slab at least 100mm thick (150mm for heavy vehicles), steel mesh reinforcement and control (expansion) joints cut at regular spacing so the slab can move without random cracking. Get those right and a concrete drive lasts 30–40 years with almost no maintenance — the longest life of any common driveway surface. Skimp on the base or the joints and hairline cracks appear in the first winter.
