What drives the price
The headline per-m² rate covers excavation, a compacted Type 1 MOT sub-base, a weed membrane, edging and the gravel itself. What pushes a quote up is a stabilising grid (well worth it to stop the stone migrating), a decorative aggregate instead of standard shingle, groundworks if the site slopes or the ground is soft, extra edging on an irregular shape, and region, with London and the South East at the top of the band.
Loose gravel vs stabilised grid
Plain loose gravel over a sub-base is the cheapest finish, but the stone scatters onto paths, sinks into ruts where cars turn, and needs topping up. A stabilising grid (a cellular paver filled with gravel) costs £15–£30 per m² more but locks the stone in place, stops rutting, is easier to walk and wheel on, and is the finish most installers recommend for a driveway that takes daily car use. For a lightly-used or overflow parking area, loose gravel is fine; for a main drive, budget for the grid.
Planning and drainage rules
Gravel is naturally permeable, so a gravel driveway that lets rainwater soak into the ground normally does not need planning permission, even over 5m² — one of its biggest advantages over solid concrete or non-permeable block paving. You still must not channel surface water onto the public highway, and on clay or high-water-table sites a soakaway may be needed. A good installer confirms the ground drains before quoting.

How the build runs (1–3 days on site)
- Survey and quote — installer checks levels, drainage and access, and confirms the gravel depth and grid (a few days before site).
- Excavation — dig out 150–250mm, remove spoil, set falls away from the house (day 1).
- Edging and membrane — fix edge restraints and lay the geotextile membrane so the gravel cannot mix into the ground.
- Sub-base — lay and compact Type 1 MOT in layers for a firm, well-drained base.
