Loft Insulation Grants in 2026: Up to ยฃ1,500 Free Insulation (UK)
Most UK homes lose roughly a quarter of their heat through an uninsulated loft โ and three separate 2026 funding schemes can cover the work for nothing or close to it. This guide: which scheme pays for what, who qualifies under each, the real cost if you can't get a grant, and how to avoid the cold-call scams that have surged this year.
Three Grant Schemes, Three Sets of Rules
Loft insulation is funded under three separate 2026 schemes with very different eligibility rules. Most homeowners only check one โ usually ECO4 โ and assume they're stuck if they don't qualify. They often qualify under one of the others.
ECO4 (the big one)
Benefits-based: Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Income Support, Child Benefit (under income thresholds), or a local LA Flex referral.
Pays: 100% of loft insulation if home is in EPC band D, E, F or G.
Ends: 31 March 2026 (firm).
Great British Insulation Scheme
"General group" route open to households not on benefits if home is in council tax bands AโD (England), AโE (Scotland/Wales) and EPC band D or below.
Pays: 75โ100% of loft top-up, usually capped ยฃ500โยฃ1,500.
Ends: March 2026.
Council / LA schemes
Hyper-local. Often tied to Home Upgrade Grant (HUG3) or Sustainable Warmth funding. Income or property-band based; rules vary by council.
Pays: typically 100% loft insulation + other measures combined.
Ends: usually rolling โ check your council site.
If you qualify under more than one, ECO4 LA Flex normally pays the most because it's bundled with other measures (cavity wall, heating controls). Don't apply to ECO4 and GBIS in parallel โ installers won't process duplicates.
What "Loft Insulation" Actually Covers Under Each Grant
"Loft insulation" is a wider term than people expect. All three schemes cover most of the work below โ but only if the installer asks for them upfront. Tick everything that applies to your loft on the survey day, not after.
โ Standard loft floor insulation
Mineral wool roll between and over joists to 270mm โ the regs-compliant depth. Covered 100% by ECO4, 75โ100% by GBIS.
โ Loft hatch insulation + draught-proofing
A cold loft hatch undoes much of the floor insulation. ECO4 includes hatch insulation; GBIS sometimes; council schemes usually.
โ Cold water tank + pipe lagging
If your loft floor is now warm-side-down, an exposed tank can freeze. Tank jackets and pipe lagging are part of the standard installation under all three schemes.
โ ๏ธ Room-in-roof / sloping ceiling insulation
If your loft is already converted, the work shifts to insulating the slopes/dwarf walls. Only ECO4 and council schemes typically fund this โ GBIS does not.
โ Re-roofing or felt replacement
Not a grant-eligible measure under any of the three schemes. If your loft needs the roof felt replaced first, that's a separate roofing job at your cost.
โ Damp or pest remediation
Installers must turn down jobs where existing damp would compromise the insulation. Fix the damp first or the grant won't be claimable.
What a Loft Insulation Job Actually Costs in 2026 (With and Without Grants)
If you don't qualify for a grant โ or you're waiting to find out โ these are the prices to plan against. Figures are TrustMark-registered installer quotes from spring 2026, exclusive of tank work or hatch upgrades.
| Property type | Loft area | Full price 2026 | With GBIS top-up | With ECO4 LA Flex |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Top-up only (50โ270mm) | any | ยฃ280โยฃ550 | ยฃ0 | ยฃ0 |
Note: "loft area" refers to floor area, not roof area. London and South East add 10โ20% to the full-price figures. ECO4 LA Flex is always ยฃ0 if you qualify (the installer claims the full cost direct from the energy company).
The Four Application Routes (Rank-Ordered by Speed)
There is no single "loft insulation grant portal". Each scheme has its own front door. Working in this order saves the most time:
- Check your local council's Sustainable Warmth / HUG3 page first. Council schemes top-up the national ones and are sometimes processed faster (4โ6 weeks vs ECO4's 8โ14). Many close to applicants once funding is spent.
- Try ECO4 LA Flex via your council's energy team, not via the installer. The council issues a Declaration of Eligibility that the installer needs; getting it direct cuts the middleman.
- If on qualifying benefits, apply ECO4 standard via Ofgem's installer directory โ pick three TrustMark-registered installers and let them compete on the bundle (loft + heating controls + hatch).
- If not on benefits and not in LA Flex, apply to the Great British Insulation Scheme via gov.uk/apply-great-british-insulation-scheme. Confirmation is automated against council tax + EPC band.

Loft Insulation Cold Calls Have Surged โ 5 Red Flags
Trading Standards have flagged loft insulation cold-callers as one of the top three scam categories for 2026, alongside boiler grants and solar. The pattern is consistent โ these signals mean it's a scam, not a grant:
๐ฉ Door-knocking or unsolicited cold call
Genuine grant administrators don't sell door-to-door or cold-call. ECO4 and GBIS reach homeowners via council referrals or direct gov.uk applications only.
๐ฉ "Free survey today, must decide today"
Time pressure is the scam signature. Real schemes work to your timetable, not theirs.
๐ฉ No TrustMark or PAS 2030/2035 number on quote
Every legitimate ECO4/GBIS installer is TrustMark registered and PAS 2030/2035 certified. The numbers must appear on the quote.
๐ฉ Asked to pay upfront "to release the grant"
No genuine 2026 loft insulation grant requires homeowner payment before work starts. Funding flows from energy company โ installer.
๐ฉ Cash-only or vague company name
Verify the company on the TrustMark register before any survey. Check Companies House too โ most scam outfits are dormant or under-3-months old.
๐ฉ "Won't pass EPC without our boards"
Some cold-callers push expensive "premium" boards over mineral wool. The grant covers standard PAS-compliant mineral wool โ anything else is upsell.
Report cold-callers to Trading Standards via Citizens Advice on 0808 223 1133. Suspected ECO4 fraud goes to Ofgem direct.
