Getting it priced properly
1. Say what the waste IS
Volume alone does not price a job. Soil, concrete and plasterboard are all charged differently, and a quote given without that detail will change on the day.
2. Check the carrier licence
Ask for the waste carrier licence number and check it on the Environment Agency register. You stay liable under duty of care if your waste is fly-tipped.
3. Settle where it stands
On your own land you need no permit. On the road the council charges £30–£80 a week — confirm who is arranging and paying for it.
Asbestos removal — frequently asked questions
Some non-licensed material, such as a cement garage roof, may legally be handled by a competent person with the right controls. Licensed material — pipe lagging, insulation board, sprayed coating — may only be removed by an HSE-licensed contractor. Ask to see the licence and check it on the HSE register.
You do not, by looking. Anything in a property built or refurbished before 2000 could contain it. A management survey at £200–£350 is the only way to know, and it is cheaper than disturbing it and finding out.
Yes. Asbestos is hazardous waste, must be double-bagged and labelled, and needs a consignment note. It cannot go in a normal skip, which is why disposal is priced separately at £50–£200.
Undisturbed and in good condition it is often safer left alone and managed. The risk comes from disturbing it — drilling, sanding or breaking it — which is exactly what a renovation does.
