Match the cure to the cause
Garden drainage goes wrong when the fix does not match the problem. A French drain at £40–90 a metre moves surface water that is sitting where it falls; a soakaway at £800–2,500 gives that water somewhere to go when the ground itself will not take it; a full piped herringbone is for a lawn that is waterlogged across its whole area. Paying for a soakaway when the real issue is a blocked existing drain is money wasted, so the first job is working out where the water comes from and where it is trying to go.
