Where Your Kitchen Budget Actually Goes
On a typical UK supply-and-fit kitchen, cabinetry and worktops take the largest share of the money, followed by labour and appliances. As a rough guide for a mid-range project: units and carcasses account for around 30–35% of the total, worktops 10–20% (laminate at the low end, quartz, granite or Dekton at the high end), appliances 15–20%, and fitting labour 20–30%. Sinks, taps, handles, lighting, splashbacks and waste disposal make up the rest.

The single biggest lever on the total is finish level, not size. Moving from a budget to a luxury spec on the same layout can more than double the bill, because it upgrades the units, the worktop and the appliances all at once.

Supply-Only vs Supply-and-Fit: What a Fair Quote Covers
Supply-only means you buy the units, worktop and appliances yourself and pay a fitter separately to install them. Supply-and-fit rolls both into one price from a kitchen company or a fitter who sources the units for you. Supply-only can look cheaper on paper, but you carry the risk if something is measured wrong, arrives damaged or does not fit — so weigh the saving against who is accountable when a door is short or a worktop template is out.
A fair supply-and-fit quote should itemise far more than cabinets. Expect it to cover removing and disposing of the old kitchen, fitting the new units and worktop, connecting the sink and taps, reconnecting or installing appliances, and any minor plumbing and electrical work needed to bring services to their new positions. Tiling, splashbacks, flooring, plastering and decorating are often priced as extras, so check line by line whether they are in or out.

How to Phase a Kitchen and Choose a Fitter
If the full spec is out of reach, phasing keeps the project moving without wasting money. Keep the existing layout to avoid paying twice for plumbing and electrics, fit good-quality carcasses now and upgrade the doors or worktop later, and tackle the disruptive items — flooring, wiring and plumbing — while the room is stripped back. A facelift that reuses sound units can deliver most of the visual change for roughly a third of the cost of a full refit.
When you compare fitters, ask each for an itemised written quote on the same scope, confirm whether the price is supply-and-fit or fit-only, and check recent work and references.
