How this calculator works

Every figure in this calculator is the one published in the cost table on our outdoor lighting guide. Pick the option that matches your job and the calculator returns that published range, adjusted for your region - it does not model anything the guide does not already say.

That is deliberate. A calculator whose rates drift from the page it sits under is worse than no calculator, because two numbers on the same site disagree.

What it cannot know: access, the condition of what is already there, and anything structural. Those are what separate three real quotes from each other.

The line that changes a lighting quote

This prices a scheme by fitting count and region, but the line that changes a real quote is whether the work needs a new outdoor circuit. Adding fittings to an existing, protected circuit is one price; a new circuit is notifiable under Part P and must be certified by a registered electrician, which the estimate cannot assume for you. Ask any quote to state clearly which of the two it is pricing.

If the lighting is going in around a new deck or a shed you want powered, the decking guide and the garden shed guide cover those structures separately.

Around £50–£150 per fitting on an existing circuit, £500–£1,500 for a 4–8 light scheme, plus £200–£500 if a new outdoor circuit is needed.

New outdoor circuits are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations - registered-electrician work. Swapping a like-for-like fitting or using a 12V plug-in kit is not notifiable.

A low-voltage plug-and-play kit: £100–£400 fitted, no trenching, no notification. The trade is brightness and permanence - mains schemes light trees, low voltage lights paths.

They are the outdoor job buyers notice: a PIR floodlight at £80–£250 installed is among the cheapest visible improvements a house exterior can buy.
