Water softener Cost Calculator

A water softener costs £600–£2,000 supplied and fitted: £400–£1,500 for the unit and £200–£500 to plumb in, plus £5–£10 a month in block salt. In the hard-water half of the UK it pays for itself in scale it stops.

How this calculator works

Every figure in this calculator is the one published in the cost table on our water softener guide. Pick the option that matches your job and the calculator returns that published range, adjusted for your region - it does not model anything the guide does not already say.

That is deliberate. A calculator whose rates drift from the page it sits under is worse than no calculator, because two numbers on the same site disagree.

What it cannot know: access, the condition of what is already there, and anything structural. Those are what separate three real quotes from each other.

Around £600–£1,000 for a compact unit, £900–£1,500 for a standard family softener, and up to £2,000 for high-capacity twin-cylinder machines - plus £5–£10 a month in salt.

In hard-water areas - broadly the South and East above ~200ppm - usually yes: scale shortens appliance life and coats heat exchangers. In soft-water regions it does nothing you need.

UK practice is to keep one unsoftened tap for drinking and cooking, mainly for sodium levels and infant formula guidance. Most installs keep the kitchen cold tap hard for exactly this.

They condition scale rather than remove hardness - results are mixed and the science is thinner than for ion-exchange softeners. At £30–£200 they are the low-stakes experiment; a softener is the proven fix.
