What drives the price of a water softener
The unit itself sets the floor: a compact softener for a flat or small home is £600–£1,000, a standard family machine £900–£1,500, and a high-capacity twin-cylinder unit that softens continuously runs to £2,000. Sizing follows the number of people and the hardness of your supply, not the floor area - a busy family on very hard water needs more capacity than the size of the house suggests. Installation is the part that varies most. A softener plumbs into the rising main, usually near the stopcock, and needs a drain for the backwash and a socket nearby; if the mains comes in somewhere awkward - a garage across the house, or under a fitted kitchen - the £200–£500 fitting figure climbs with the pipework. Most installs also keep the kitchen cold tap on hard water for drinking, which is a short extra run rather than a big cost.
Then there is the running cost: budget £5–£10 a month in block salt, more for a large household on hard water. In hard-water areas - broadly the South and East above ~200ppm - usually yes: scale shortens appliance life and coats heat exchangers. In soft-water regions it does nothing you need.
UK practice is to keep one unsoftened tap for drinking and cooking, mainly for sodium levels and infant formula guidance. Most installs keep the kitchen cold tap hard for exactly this.
They condition scale rather than remove hardness - results are mixed and the science is thinner than for ion-exchange softeners. At £30–£200 they are the low-stakes experiment; a softener is the proven fix.

Reckon on £5–£10 a month in block salt for a typical household, rising with the number of people and how hard the supply is. Electricity use is tiny. Against that, the saving is the scale it keeps out of your boiler, cylinder and pipework, which is where hard water does its expensive damage.
