A £5 test kit or your water company's postcode lookup tells you the ppm. Under ~150ppm, save your money.
2. Size it by people, not bedrooms
Softener capacity is regeneration frequency. A four-person household on a small unit regenerates constantly and eats salt.
3. Get the warranty position in writing
The installer should confirm your boiler manufacturer's stance on softened water in the quote - two minutes that avoids an argument years later.

Check how hard your water actually is first
A softener earns its £600–2,000 in the hard-water half of the country and earns very little in the soft-water half, so the first check is your own supply. Your water company publishes the hardness for your postcode; below roughly 200 mg/l as calcium carbonate the payback gets thin. Where it is hard, the savings are real but slow — less scale furring up the boiler and pipes, less detergent, longer appliance life — set against the £5–10 a month of block salt it drinks. On the install, the two things that decide the price are where the unit goes (near the rising main and a drain is cheapest) and whether a plumber has to run new pipework to reach it.
