4 steps. Covers run length, material, access and region.

How this calculator works

Guttering is priced per metre plus a fixed allowance for downpipes, brackets and outlets, which do not scale neatly with run length. Access is separated because on a two-storey house it can be a quarter of the total.

Material spread is enormous — a factor of five from uPVC to copper. For most houses uPVC is the right answer and the money is better spent elsewhere. Cast iron and copper earn their cost on period and listed properties, where they may be what consent requires.

Guttering calculator FAQs

20โ€“25 years. It usually fails at the joints rather than along the run โ€” brackets sag, seals harden and the gutter starts to drip. Seamless aluminium avoids that by being rolled on site as one continuous length.

If it is the same age, yes. The access cost is identical whether you replace the gutter alone or both, so doing them separately means paying for a tower or scaffold twice. It is the single easiest saving on this kind of job.

On a long run with a history of leaking joints, often yes. It is rolled to length on site so there are no joints except at corners and outlets. Expect roughly double uPVC, with a considerably longer life.

Usually not. Overflowing in heavy rain is most often blockage, a fall running the wrong way, or too few downpipes for the roof area. Get it cleared and checked before paying to replace anything.
