1. Slate grade & origin
Welsh slate can cost 2–3× Spanish. Even within natural slate, T1/S1 grades command a premium over lower grades for their lower water absorption and longer life.
2. Roof size & complexity
Valleys, hips, dormers and multiple pitches slow the roofer and increase cutting waste, adding 10–25% over a simple gable roof of the same area.
3. Structure & battens
Natural slate is heavier than concrete tile. If the existing structure or battens need upgrading to carry it, expect £600–£2,500 extra.
