Ducted Air Conditioning Cost UK 2026
Ducted systems hide the indoor unit in a loft or ceiling void and feed rooms through grilles, so nothing is visible but the vents. Expect ยฃ6,000–ยฃ15,000 for a floor, and ยฃ8,000–ยฃ20,000 for whole-house VRF.
Ducted and whole-house cost — 2026
Ducted work is far cheaper alongside a renovation, when the void and routes are already open.
| System | Installed cost | Coverage | Install time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ducted / concealed system | ยฃ6,000–15,000 | Whole floor | 3–7 days | New builds, renovations, hidden install |
| VRF / VRV (whole house) | ยฃ8,000–20,000 | Whole house | 5–10 days | Large homes, independent room-by-room control |
| Retrofit into a finished house | +20–40% | As above | +2–4 days | Lifting floors and making good afterwards |

What changes the cost
| Cost factor | Typical impact | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Pipe run length | +ยฃ150–400 | Runs over ~5m need extra refrigerant pipe, insulation and labour; long vertical runs in flats cost most |
| Condenser siting & access | +ยฃ100–600 | Ground level next to the room is cheapest; roof, height or scaffold access adds cost |
| Number of indoor units | +ยฃ700–1,500 each | Each extra head adds unit, pipework and commissioning time |
| Electrical work | +ยฃ150–500 | A dedicated spur, consumer-unit way or isolator may be needed |
| Capacity (kW / BTU) | +ยฃ200–1,200 | Oversizing wastes money up front and on running cost |
| Brand & range | +ยฃ400–800 | Premium Daikin/Mitsubishi designer ranges vs value Samsung/LG |
| Making good | +ยฃ0–300 | Trunking, core-drilling, plaster patching or repainting around the route |
Air conditioning cost by UK region — 2026
Labour rates and access drive most of the regional spread. Figures below are for a single-room split; the same percentages apply across the other system types.
| Region | Single-room split (installed) | vs UK average |
|---|---|---|
| London | ยฃ1,900–3,600 | +25–30% |
| South East | ยฃ1,750–3,300 | +15–25% |
| South West & East | ยฃ1,550–3,000 | +5–10% |
| Midlands | ยฃ1,450–2,800 | Baseline |
| North of England | ยฃ1,400–2,700 | −5% |
| Wales & Scotland | ยฃ1,400–2,750 | −5% to baseline |
Getting it priced properly
1. Size it first
Capacity comes from room size, glazing and aspect — not from guesswork. An installer who quotes without asking about the room is guessing.
2. Check F-Gas registration
Anything touching the refrigerant circuit legally requires an F-Gas registered engineer. Ask to see it and check it on the register.
3. Compare like for like
Get three itemised quotes covering the same capacity, brand tier and pipe run, so you are comparing the job and not the wording.
Ducted / concealed — frequently asked questions
It can, but it is the expensive way to do it. Running ducts through a finished house means lifting floors or dropping ceilings and making good afterwards, which is why retrofit adds 20–40% over the same system fitted during a renovation.
A concealed indoor unit typically needs 300–400mm of clear void plus access for servicing. Where the loft is a room or the void is shallow, a multi-split is usually the better answer.
At the room, yes — the fan and compressor are both away from the living space, and only air movement at the grille is audible. The plant itself is not quieter, it is just further away.
Larger ducted and VRF systems usually need a dedicated circuit and sometimes a consumer-unit way. Budget ยฃ150–500 for electrical work on top of the system price.
