Getting it priced properly
1. Size it first
Capacity comes from room size, glazing and aspect — not from guesswork. An installer who quotes without asking about the room is guessing.
2. Check F-Gas registration
Anything touching the refrigerant circuit legally requires an F-Gas registered engineer. Ask to see it and check it on the register.
3. Compare like for like
Get three itemised quotes covering the same capacity, brand tier and pipe run, so you are comparing the job and not the wording.

Usually yes beyond two rooms, because one condenser serves them all — you save on the outdoor unit and on external wall penetrations, though the pipe runs get longer.
Yes, each indoor head has its own control. On a standard multi-split all heads must be in the same mode — all cooling or all heating. Independent room-by-room mode needs VRF, which runs £8,000–£20,000 for a whole house.
Domestic multi-splits typically run two to five heads. Beyond that, or across more than one floor with long runs, an installer will normally propose VRF or a second condenser.
Three to four rooms running together draw 1.0–3.0kW, about 27–80p an hour, or £100–260 across a UK summer.
