Getting it priced properly
1. Size it first
Capacity comes from room size, glazing and aspect — not from guesswork. An installer who quotes without asking about the room is guessing.
2. Check F-Gas registration
Anything touching the refrigerant circuit legally requires an F-Gas registered engineer. Ask to see it and check it on the register.
3. Compare like for like

Portable units — frequently asked questions
For occasional or emergency cooling, in a rented flat, or where no external unit is allowed, they are the only realistic option. For a room you will cool every summer for years, a fitted split is quieter, cools better and costs far less to run.
A portable draws close to its full 1.0–1.5kW most of the time and vents warm air through a hose that also lets warm air back in around the window seal. A fitted split modulates down to 0.3–0.7kW once the room is at temperature.
For a portable, normally not — nothing is fixed and nothing is drilled. For anything with an external condenser you will need the landlord’s consent, and in a flat usually the freeholder’s too.
