Getting it priced properly
1. Size it first
Capacity comes from room size, glazing and aspect — not from guesswork. An installer who quotes without asking about the room is guessing.
2. Check F-Gas registration
Anything touching the refrigerant circuit legally requires an F-Gas registered engineer. Ask to see it and check it on the register.

Single-room split — frequently asked questions
One indoor head and one condenser is a one-day job for a two-person team, assuming the condenser sits at ground level near the room and the pipe run is under about 5m. If the condenser has to sit on a first-floor wall or a flat roof, or the refrigerant pipe has to cross the house, allow a day and a half plus the extra pipework and labour shown in the table above. Fitting two or three rooms in one visit almost always works out cheaper per room, because the engineer only sets up, vacuums the system and commissions it once.
Yes. Every modern split is a reversible heat pump, so it heats in winter as well as cools in summer, typically at a SCOP of 4.0–5.1 depending on brand and model. In practice it returns roughly 4kW of heat for every 1kW of electricity it draws, so a split used for shoulder-season heating often costs less to run than the same warmth from a gas boiler. It will not replace central heating in a hard frost, but it takes the chill off mornings and evenings cheaply.
Usually not for a single external unit on a house within permitted development, but siting, noise and conservation-area status all matter. As a rule the outdoor unit should sit well clear of the boundary, be the smallest and quietest model that will do the job, and you should expect tighter rules on flats, listed buildings and Article 4 areas than on a typical house. A 2.5kW bedroom split draws 0.3–0.7kW cooling, which is roughly 7–20p an hour, or £30–70 across a UK summer at current electricity prices. Run for heating over the milder months it costs less per unit of warmth than a gas boiler thanks to that heat-pump efficiency, though one bedroom split will not heat a whole house through a cold snap.
