How Much Does a Resin Driveway Cost in 2026 UK?

A new resin-bound driveway costs £65 to £100 per m² fully installed in 2026 — or £40 to £60 per m² for the cheaper resin-bonded alternative. A typical 40m² UK driveway lands at £2,600 to £4,000 with proper preparation. We pull real per-m² pricing from 519 UK towns, break down what drives the cost, and explain why some quotes are half the price of others.

Resin Driveway Cost at a Glance

Typical 2026 UK installed prices per m² for the two resin driveway types, plus what you should budget for sub-base preparation. Most homeowners pay between £2,400 and £4,600 for a 40m² drive once the existing surface and sub-base are factored in.

Resin-Bound
Premium · Permeable · 40m²
£2,600 – £4,000

£65-£100/m² installed. Stone aggregate mixed with UV-stable polyurethane, troweled smooth. SuDS compliant, low maintenance, 20-25 year life. Needs solid sub-base.

Resin-Bonded
Budget · Loose-Looking · 40m²
£1,600 – £2,400

£40-£60/m² installed. Resin painted on, stone scattered on top. Looks like loose gravel. NOT permeable. 10-15 year life. Cheaper but lower quality finish.

Sub-base + Prep
Often forgotten · 40m²
£800 – £2,200

If existing sub-base is failing or absent, factor 150 mm MOT Type 1 + geotextile + edge restraints. Skip this and the resin de-bonds within 18 months.

The Critical Distinction

Most quotes hide whether they're for resin-bound or resin-bonded — the two products look similar at a glance but cost, longevity and drainage performance differ sharply.

Resin-bound (premium, recommended)

Stone aggregate is pre-mixed with UV-stable polyurethane resin in a forced-action mixer, then trowel-applied 18 mm thick. The result is fully porous (SuDS-compliant), seamless and lasts 20 to 25 years on a sound sub-base. £65 to £100/m² installed.

Resin-bonded (budget)

Resin is roller-applied to the prepared base then bare aggregate is broadcast onto the wet resin. The aggregate is bonded loose-side-up, giving a textured, gravel-like appearance. Not permeable, will lose stones over time, 10 to 15 year life. £40 to £60/m² installed.

Resin-bound is the right answer for almost all 2026 UK driveways. Resin-bonded only makes sense for low-traffic paths where the aggregate-look is desired and the slightly lower budget is the deciding factor.

Why Quotes Vary by 50%+

Two installers can quote on the same 40m² drive and come back £1,800 apart — here's where the variance hides:

  • Sub-base depth. Proper drives have 150 mm of compacted MOT Type 1 with geotextile under it. Budget installers go to 75 mm or skip the geotextile, halving prep cost but causing rutting and resin de-bond inside 18 months.
  • Aggregate quality. Premium UV-stable European aggregate is £170 to £260 per tonne; budget Asian aggregate is £80 to £140. Cheap aggregate fades to grey within 3 years.
  • Resin grade. UV-stable polyurethane (rec.) vs cheaper epoxy or non-UV-stable resin. The latter yellows in sunlight and goes brittle.
  • Edge restraints. Galvanised steel or concrete haunching, vs no edge at all. Without restraints the resin curls at the perimeter.
  • Drainage. Resin-bound is permeable but only if the sub-base drains. Budget jobs put resin-bound straight onto impermeable concrete — it then ponds and looks like a swimming pool in heavy rain.
  • Warranty. 10-year structured warranties from BALI / Interlay members vs 1-year contractor-only warranties. Worth the premium.

Resin Driveways and SuDS Compliance

Since 2008, any non-permeable front driveway over 5m² in England requires SuDS-compliant drainage or planning permission. Resin-bound is permeable and SuDS-compliant by default — provided the sub-base is also permeable (open-graded MOT or No.4 sub-base, not bedded concrete). Resin-bonded is NOT permeable and triggers SuDS or planning. This is the single most important reason to choose resin-bound over resin-bonded for any 2026 UK front driveway.

Resin Driveway Cost FAQ

How much does a 40m² resin driveway cost in 2026?

£2,600 to £4,000 fully installed for resin-bound, or £1,600 to £2,400 for resin-bonded. Add £800 to £2,200 if the existing sub-base needs replacing.

Why do some resin driveway quotes look so cheap?

The biggest variance is sub-base depth (proper drives need 150 mm MOT Type 1; budget installers go to 75 mm or skip geotextile). Other shortcuts: cheap non-UV-stable resin, low-quality aggregate, no edge restraints. Cheap quotes typically fail within 18 months.

Is resin-bound or resin-bonded better?

Resin-bound for almost all UK driveways: permeable (SuDS compliant), longer life (20-25 vs 10-15 years), seamless smooth finish, easier wheelchair / pram access. Resin-bonded is cheaper but loses aggregate, isn't permeable and triggers planning permission for front drives over 5m².

Do I need planning permission for a resin driveway?

No for resin-bound (permeable) over a permeable sub-base, regardless of size. Yes (or SuDS-compliant drainage) for resin-bonded over 5m² on the front of a house in England.

Can I lay resin over my existing concrete or tarmac?

Yes if the existing surface is sound — saves £500 to £1,400 on excavation. But over impermeable concrete, the resin-bound surface will pond in heavy rain (the resin is permeable but the base isn't). Solve with strategic gullies or SuDS detail.

How long does a resin driveway take to install?

2 to 3 days for a typical 40m² drive: 1 day excavation and sub-base, 1 day curing and edge work, 1 day resin pour and finish. Walkable next morning, drivable after 24 to 48 hours depending on temperature.

Does the cost include sub-base, drainage and edges?

Always check. Reputable BALI / Interlay quotes include sub-base, edge restraints, drainage gullies and warranty. Underpriced quotes typically itemise these as extras.
