How to read a plumbing quote
Plumbing quotes come in two very different shapes, and comparing them like-for-like is the main thing to get right. Some plumbers give a fixed price for the whole job, others charge an hourly rate plus parts, and a few add a call-out fee on top. A fixed price is easier to budget but is only fair once someone has actually seen the job, while an hourly rate can be cheaper for a quick fix but open-ended if problems turn up behind the wall. Ask each quote to itemise labour against parts, because a cheap headline that skimps on the tap, valve or sanitaryware is not really cheaper once you add the bits back. Emergency and out-of-hours work carries a premium of roughly a third to a half more, so if the job can wait for a booked slot it usually costs less.
