Is a Solar Roof Worth It in 2026 UK?

A solar roof (Tesla Solar Roof, GB-Sol PV-Slate, SolteQ) replaces your roof covering — the PV cells are the tile or slate. Every tile is the roof. A solar panel (or "panel-on-roof PV") sits on top of an existing tiled or slated roof, fixed to brackets that hook over the battens. Cost-wise: solar roofs run £18,000–£32,000 fitted on a 70 m² roof; equivalent panel-on-roof PV runs £7,500–£14,000. The solar roof premium buys you aesthetics (no visible panels), full roof replacement, and a single warranty. Panel-on-roof wins on £/kWp generated, install time (1–3 days vs 5–14 days), and easier panel upgrades in 10–15 years.

Tesla warrants the Solar Roof tiles for 25 years on the tile itself and 25 years on power output (guaranteed to produce at least 85% of rated output at year 25). The Powerwall battery (usually paired) carries a separate 10-year warranty. In practice, the glass-laminate solar tiles should last 30–40+ years like a high-grade clay tile — there's no plausible failure mechanism beyond impact damage. The inverter electronics typically need replacing once around year 12–15 (£1,500–£2,500). GB-Sol PV-Slate carries a 25-year power-output warranty and a 10-year product warranty — broadly comparable.

Conservation areas: often yes, where panel-on-roof PV would be refused. Because GB-Sol PV-Slate looks identical to a Welsh slate roof from street level, planning officers in conservation areas (where panels visible from the highway are typically refused under Article 4 directions) frequently approve it. Tesla's glass tiles are more visually distinct and approval is more case-by-case. Listed buildings: planning permission and Listed Building Consent both required, and approval depends entirely on your conservation officer's view — assume you need a sympathetic case and a 2–3 month timeline.
